Chloe Bellemere (FR) has a multidisciplinary spatial practice that spans from scenography for theatre and dance, to performance, and the two-dimensional space of images.
SCENOGRAPHY // After graduating from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2016, following studies at Pratt Institute in New York and the UNSW College of Fine Arts in Sydney, she began her career working with artist Pierrick Sorin. She then evoluated in fashion, where she assisted the artistic direction of the Issey Miyake for the fashion shows. She then was selected as a scenographer for the Comédie-Française Academy (2019–2021), and has collaborated with artists and directors including Marina Hands, Blanca Li, and Robert Wilson. Alongside her artistic explorations, she creates scenography for theatre and contemporary dance in France and internationally.
RESEARCH // Through performance, video, and photography, she draws inspiration from natural environments — oceanic landscapes, islands, volcanoes — as well as more hostile spaces — soil-retaining infrastructures, water surplus storage networks — in order to explore memory, its different layers of consciousness, and the connections and tensions held within a space and a body. She collaborates with various artists, notably working in duo with performer Inga Galinyte through their creative process Memory Islands, which they develop and activate in various artist residencies based on islands.
PHOTOGRAPHY // She develops documentary and performance photography alongside artist Robert Wilson. During her first year at the Comédie-Française, she ran a weekly blog, L’acamédie, documenting the experience of the academy members within the theatre. She also undertakes photographic commissions for opera, theatre, and events
